设立始末：
玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章设立于1757年6月18日，为科林战役的当日。6月22日，奥地利皇后玛丽娅•特蕾莎将勋章首次授予在科林战役中大获全胜的军官们，并以此表彰他们为战胜敌人而表现出的英勇行为，以及在战斗过程中“对陛下的忠诚之心”。玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章授予对象有专门的定义“对一场战役起到至关重要的军官，即使他们来自那些被人遗忘的岗位”。因此在奥地利的军队中流传着这一个说法：只有坚决执行命令，就会被授予勋章。虽然这一说法只是部队中的戏说而已，但足以证明玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章在他们心中的重要性。玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章是奥地利军人的最高荣耀，也是奥地利军队最高的荣誉勋章。

科林战役（Battle of Kolin） ，是七年战争中普鲁士与奥地利在1757年6月18日的战役。科林战役中，奥地利军折损了8100余名官兵与近三千匹马；然而普鲁士军元气大伤，一共死伤13700人（约三分之一以上），包括两千名的骑兵，并且抛弃了45门大炮和全数的辎重。此次战役中奥地利大获全胜，腓特烈二世吃到了人生中第一场败仗，并成为七年战争中的转折点。

在俄土战争期间，奥地利和俄国结盟，弗雷德里克•约西亚作为奥地利指挥官参加对土作战。他亲率30万大军在土耳其摩尔多瓦西边支援俄国军队。
1788年，约西亚围攻克卢森，围困持续了三个月，从7月2日持续到9月19日克卢森陷落。
约西亚随后进军雅西（罗马尼亚境内，曾经的摩尔多瓦首都）。1789年7月30日，约西亚参与福克沙尼战役，约西亚支援俄国将军亚历山大•苏沃洛夫的六万军队。俄国最后取得了胜利。
1789年9月22日，约西亚参与了马瑞斯提战役，帮助俄国取得了巨大的胜利。他也被授予大十字级玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章。

奥匈帝国山地部队的彼得•谢德少尉，因在1918年6月13日指挥第17山地连登上蒙蒂塞洛山峰，获得了骑士级玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章。这幅是战后阿尔发•华尔腾为他画制的油画，油画中少尉的勋章佩戴在第二颗纽扣上，实际上在油画并不符合事实，少尉的勋章是在1931年10月3日第195次授勋仪式上获得的。
勋章构造：
中央为圆形奥地利国旗图样，表面也涂有珐琅，周边环绕铭文“Fortitvdini（坚韧）”。
星芒章采用与勋章的造形相同，只是在银质十字臂四周加饰了一圈涂着绿色珐琅的橡叶。
勋章的勋带为红-白-红，与奥地利国旗颜色相同。
佩戴方式：
大十字级分为星芒章和勋章授带。星芒章佩戴在制服的左胸口，在一般正式场合佩戴勋章授带，绶带颜色为奥地利的国旗色红白红。
指挥官级为颈章。佩戴在领口位置，勋带颜色为红白红。
骑士级为普通勋章，配有一天红白红的奥地利三角勋带。勋带佩戴在左胸口，不过勋章的勋带也可以佩戴在制服的第二颗纽扣上，这样的佩戴方式在一战期间很常见。
颁发数量：
从1757年-1939年期间，玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章三级勋章共颁发了1069枚，其中25%的获得者为匈牙利人。在一战期间，共颁发了三级勋章131枚。
1918年，奥匈帝国战败，哈布斯堡末代皇帝卡尔一世将勋章颁发权移交给了新政Ｆ的勋章委员会。勋章委员会在一战后到二战前这段时间内依然进行勋章获得者的审核工作，直到1931年10月3日宣布取消玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章。

从1758年3月7日第1次授勋仪式开始，每次玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章的授勋仪式都会进行官方记录。一战期间，从1914年8月27日的171次授勋仪式到1918年10月2日的185次授勋仪式，共举行了15次正式的授勋仪式。1931年10月3日，勋章委员会在第195次授勋仪式追授一枚骑士级玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章给博罗埃维奇•冯•博伊那。1939年到1945年期间只颁发了一枚勋章,于1944年1月28日授予第九匈牙利國Ｍ师指挥官Vitéz Kornel Oszlányi（Vitéz是匈牙利勇敢奖章的获得头衔）
博罗埃维奇•冯•博伊那（1856年12月13日-1920年5月23日。一战期间著名防御战略家之一，1918年战争结束前晋升陆军元帅衔。1931年追授骑士级玛丽娅•特蕾莎军功勋章。）
